a2r[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating the papal bull: Pope Gregory IX is depicted seated at a desk with an open book on the lectern. He raises his left hand to address the people in front of him and holds a volume in his right hand. The pope is presenting the Liber Extra to a group of people consisting of three cardinals, a bishop and two kneeling men wearing hats and fur capes (presumably jurists). One of the latter holds out both hands, preparing to receive the volume. These individuals represent the groups of people to whom the compilation of Canon Law is addressed: the clergy and the university community.]
