BIBLIOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS
Unitary manuscript
Binding: rebound
Layout: 2 columns; Textus inclusus (Glossa)
Illustrations: F. 4r: portrait of Pope Gregory IX depicted in a frontal position, with a halo and his right hand raised (and perhaps a volume in his left hand?). On the right column: the Trinity is represented by God the Father seated on a throne, spreading his arms and holding a crucifix on which the body of Christ hangs, while the dove of the Holy Ghost is suspended between the two. F. 76v: the miniature represents the Judgement of Solomon: King Solomon is depicted seated on the right, wearing a crown and red cloak with fur trimming. He holds a sceptre in his left hand and raises his index finger, presumably pronouncing a verdict. On his sides are a swordsman with a shouldered sword and a man wearing a cape with his hand on the sword in his scabbard. A third armed man is depicted in the centre; he is wearing a helmet and a chain mail and is holding the disputed child in his left arm. Before the king are the two mothers: one is standing and pointing at the child with her right index finger (she is probably the false one); the other is kneeling, her hands joined in supplication (she is probably the right one). F. 139v: a pope (or bishop) is depicted seated on a throne, his left hand holding a crozier and his right hand elevated. On both his sides he is surrounded by a group of tonsured friars; the one directly in front of him is holding his left hand on his chest, perhaps to defend himself. F. 207r: a tonsured cleric is depicted standing between a man and a woman, officiating their marriage. He holds them by the wrists (the right one for the bride, the left one for the groom), preparing to join their hands to make their union official (dextrarum iunctio). The bride and groom are escorted by their respective parties, namely a group of women for the bride and a group of men for the groom. F. 228r: a tonsured, bearded and hooded cleric is depicted seated under an arched architectural structure, while raising his right hand to address the people in front of him (or to grasp something?). Behind him stand a tonsured friar and another man with a red head gear. On the left is a group of laymen; the three on the foreground are presumably to be identified with jurists, given their hats and their fur-lined long robes; the man directly in front of the cleric has his index finger raised in an argumentative gesture and holds an unravelled scroll in his left hand. It is unclear whether the jurist is handing the written text to the ecclesiastical judge (delivery of the libellus?) or whether it is a note from which he is reading his plea.
