CONTENT ANALYSIS
1 Gregorius IX papa, Decretales (sive Liber Extra)
Illustrations: F. 2r: Pope Gregory IX is depicted seated, his right hand extended in a blessing gesture and his left reaching towards a volume bound with a tie on the fore-edge (both hands have little red crosses on them). The volume is offered to him by a kneeling young man; behind him are a cardinal and a Benedictine friar, who holds another volume. The cardinal addresses the Pope with his right hand and introduces the kneeling man to him by placing a hand on his shoulder.
F. 109r: a hooded man, presumably a judge, is depicted seated in a frontal position between two men. The judge questions the man on the left by turning towards him and pointing to him; in turn, the man bares his left hand (he is holding a glove in his right hand) and raises it, perhaps swearing to be truthful. On the other side, the man representing the opposite party raises his left hand, maybe to deny an accusation or to object to what his rival is stating.
F. 231v: a priest is standing in front of an altar, on top of which is a chalice partly covered with a cloth; he raises both his hands while celebrating the ritual of the Eucharist. Behind him are two kneeling men, both with their hands joined in prayer.
F. 320r: a priest is standing between a man and a woman, officiating their marriage. His right hand is elevated in a blessing gesture (raised index and middle finger), his left hand holds a volume bound with a tie on the fore-edge. The bride and groom join their respective right hands (dextrarum iunctio), and the groom raises his left hand to express his consent to the marriage.
F. 354r: a bishop is depicted seated, his left hand raised to address the people in front of him and his right hand pointing to a scroll, presumably a document of indictment. The scroll is offered to him by a kneeling Benedictine friar, behind whom stands an abbot. The abbot, recognisable by the crozier, raises his left hand, probably rejecting the accusation presented by the friar.
