CONTENT ANALYSIS
1 Raymundus de Pennaforti, Summulae de arbore consanguinitatis et de arbore affinitatis (?)
Incipit: ‘Gregorius episcopus servus servorum dei ...’
Explicit: ‘... auctoritate sedis apostolice speciali’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating the papal bull: Pope Gregory IX is depicted enthroned, his right hand grasping (or delivering) a volume offered to him by a tonsured friar, who perhaps could be identified with Raymond de Peñafort. The latter is accompanied by two more friars, one of whom places a hand on his chest.]
De summa trinitate et fide catholica
Incipit: ‘Innocentius tertius in concilio generalis. Firmiter credimus ...’
70v
Incipit liber secundus de iudiciis
Incipit: ‘Idem ex concilio affricano. De quo vult deo ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book II: A pope acting as a judge is depicted seated, his right hand elevated in a blessing gesture (index and middle fingers raised) and his left hand holding a volume, a symbol of the laws he enforces (in this case, those contained in the Liber Extra). In front of him are two bishops, one wearing a blue coat and the other wearing a red one and holding a crozier. The bishop in blue points to the other to accuse him of something; the latter places a hand on his chest to deny the accusation. The scene takes place under two arches supported by a column; the architectural structure could be a representation of a courtroom.]
130r
De vita et honestate clericorum. Liber tertius
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio maguntino. Ut laici secus ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book III: A priest is depicted standing in front of an altar on which is a chalice partially covered by a cloth. His left hand is raised and his right hand is blessing the chalice (index and middle fingers raised), as he prepares to celebrate the Eucharist. Behind him are two acolytes: one raises an aspergillum, the other admonishes a group of three laypeople by pointing a finger at them and pushes one of them away from the altar, as they are not allowed to witness the ritual. The man who is being pushed raises both his hands in a sign of acquiescence. The threshold of the sacred space is marked by a column supporting an arch.]
189r
Inicipit liber quartus. De sponsalibus et matrimoniis
189v
Incipit: ‘De Francia quidam nobilem mulierem ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book IV: A priest is standing between a man and a woman, officiating their marriage. He holds them by their right wrists, preparing to join their hands to make their union official (dextrarum iunctio). The groom, on the left, raises his right hand to express his consent to the marriage. Behind the spouses stand the members of their respective parties (three people each).]
207v
Incipit liber quintus. De accusationibus inquisitionibus et denunciationibus
Incipit: ‘Felix papa. Si legitimus non fuerit accusator ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book V: A pope acting as a judge is depicted enthroned, his right hand raised to address the people in front of him and his left hand holding a ferula (the papal staff). Before the pope stand a Dominican abbot and a bishop (?), both holding croziers. The abbot points at the bishop, accusing him, while the bishop raises his hand to deny the claim.]
[The text is incomplete, there are only some excerpts. The beginning is missing, the text starts from book I, titulus III, capitulus II.]
