CONTENT ANALYSIS
1 Gregorius IX papa, Decretales (sive Liber Extra)
Incipit: ‘Gregorius episcopus servus servorum dei ...’
Explicit: ‘... auctoritate sedis apostolice speciali’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating the papal bull: Pope Gregory IX is depicted enthroned, his right hand elevated in a blessing gesture (index and middle fingers raised) and his left hand held up with the palm open. On the left side are three tonsured friars, one standing with his hands joined in prayer and another (presumably to be identified with Raymond de Peñafort) kneeling while offering a volume to the Pope. On the opposite side are a bishop with his hands joined in prayer and another tonsured friar. The three groups are separated by an architectural structure with columns and three trefoil arches, under which they stand.]
De summa trinitate et fide catholica
Incipit: ‘Innocentius tertius in concilio generali. Firmiter credimus ...’
70r
Incipit liber secundus de iuditiis
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio affricano. De quovultheo censturiensi episcopo ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book II: A secular judge is depicted seated in a frontal position, visually suggesting his impartiality in the administration of justice. His left hand holds a volume, a visual representation of the laws he enforces (in this case, those contained in the Liber Extra), and his right index finger is raised to address the two people portrayed beside him. The men, who are presumably to be identified as the defendant and the plaintiff (or their representatives), stand on either side of the judge and argue their case. The judicial debate is emphasised by their identical hand gestures (raised index finger, open palm), which should be seen as them counting off their arguments or asking for the judge’s attention.]
133v
Liber tertius de vita et honestate clericorum
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio maguntino. Ut layci secus altare ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book III: A priest is depicted standing in front of an altar, on which is a chalice partially covered by a cloth; he raises both his hands as he prepares to celebrate the ritual of the Eucharist. Behind him, an acolyte is forcibly expelling a layman from the sacred space (as he is not allowed to witness the ritual), his left hand pushing the man’s arm and his right hand threatening him with a raised stick (an aspergillum?). The layman proceeds to walk away, turning his head to look at the acolyte and raising his hand as a sign of acquiescence.]
198r
Liber quartus de sponsalibus et matrimonio
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio triburiensis. De Francia quidam nobilem ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book IV: A priest is standing between a man and a woman, officiating their marriage. He holds them by their right wrists, preparing to join their hands to make their union official (dextrarum iunctio). The bride, on the left, raises her free hand to express her consent to the marriage; the groom is about to raise his hand as well.]
216r
Liber quintus de accusationibus inquisitionibus et denunciationibus
Incipit: ‘Si legitimus non fuerit accusator ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book V: A pope acting as a judge is depicted seated, his left hand raised to address the people in front of him and his right hand grasping a document with seals hanging from it. The document is handed to him by a kneeling Dominican friar, behind whom stand a group of three more Dominican, one of whom is an abbot (he is holding a crozier). The scene presumably portrays the presentation of an indictment act (the document with seals) targeted to the abbot, who raises a hand to deny the accusation. ]
265r
Explicit: ‘... pro spiritualibus facere quis homagium compellatur’
2 Bernardus Parmensis, Glossa ordinaria. Gloss to Gregorius IX's Decretales
