CONTENT ANALYSIS
1 Gregorius IX papa, Decretales (sive Liber Extra)
Gregorius episcopus servus servorum dei dilectis filius doctoribus et scolaribus universitatis parisius commorantibus salutem et apostolicam benedictionem
Incipit: ‘Rex pacificus pia miseratione disposuit ...’
Explicit: ‘... auctoritate sedis apostolice speciali’
[Illumianted frontispiece illustrating the papal bull: A teacher clothed as a secular lawyer/jurist (fur-lined cloak and hat) sits in front of a lectern and delivers a lecture on the text open in front of him; his right index finger is raised, conveying the emphasis of his explanation. In front of him are three students sharing a table, on which their open books are resting. The young men interact with the lecturer with the gestures of their hands, which are raised to participate in the lecture or point to the text. The scene takes place under two trefoil arches, inside a classroom. ]
De summa trinitate et fide catholica rubrica.
Incipit: ‘Firmiter credimus et simpliciter confitemur ...’
65r
Incipit secundus liber de iudiciis
Incipit: ‘De i quv...tdeo episcopo m centuriensi ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book II: A secular judge, recognisable by his hat and his fur-lined collar, is depicted seated, his left hand holding a sceptre and his right index finger raised to address the people in front of him (perhaps to deliver a verdict). The group before him consists of three laymen, two of whom are smaller in stature than the other characters, and a cleric, who is presumably their legal representative. One of the shorter men raises his right index finger, while the other places his hand on the cleric’s shoulder to delegate his legal claim; the cleric addresses the judge by raising his left hand and his right index finger. Behind the judge is another cleric, possibly the representative of the opposite party, who raises his left hand and places the other on the judge’s shoulder to get his attention. The scene takes place under three trefoil arches; the architectural structure could be a representation of a courtroom.]
123r
Incipit liber tercius de vita et honestate clericorum rubrica.
Incipit: ‘Ut laici secus altare quando ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book III: A priest is depicted standing in front of an altar on which is a chalice partially covered by a cloth. His left hand is raised and his right hand is blessing the chalice (index and middle fingers raised), as he prepares to celebrate the Eucharist. Behind him are an acolyte and four laypeople; the acolyte puts a hand on one of the laics’ shoulder and pushes him away from the sacred space, as they are not allowed to witness the ritual. The threshold of the sacred space is marked by a column.]
178v
Incipit liber quartus de sponsalibus et matrimonio rubrica.
Incipit: ‘De Francia quidam nobilem mulierem ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book IV: A priest is standing between a man and a woman, officiating their marriage. He holds them by their right wrists and prepares to join their hands to make their union official (dextrarum iunctio). Both spouses raise their left hands to express their consent. The bride is escorted by a woman, who raises her right index finger (perhaps to identify herself as a witness to the ceremony), while the groom is escorted by a man, who touches his arm to encourage him. The scene takes place under three arches.]
