CONTENT ANALYSIS
1 Gregorius IX papa, Decretales (sive Liber Extra)
Incipit: ‘Episcopus servus servorum dei dilectis ...’
Explicit: ‘... auctoritate sedis apostolice speciali’
[Illimunated frontispiece illustrating the papal bull: Pope Gregory IX is depicted seated on a cushion placed under an arch supported by two columns with battlements at the top. His right index finger is raised and his left hand is grasping (or perhaps handing over) a volume bound with two ties on the fore-edge. The volume is offered to him by a kneeling Dominican friar, presumably to be identified with Raymond de Peñafort. Behind the latter stand two other Dominicans, a man in a red robe (perhaps a jurist) and a bishop holding another volume. ]
De summa trinitate et fide catholica. Incipit liber primus
Incipit: ‘Innocentius tertius in concilio generali ...’
61r
Explicit liber primus. Incipit secundus de iudiciis
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book II: A pope acting as a judge is depicted enthroned in a frontal position, visually suggesting his impartiality in the administration of justice. His left hand holds a unravelled scroll and his right hand is raised to address a bishop standing on the left. The latter (perhaps to be identified with the bishop Quodvultdeus) is also holding a scroll and raises a finger in response to the judge’s gesture. On the opposite side stand a man and two tonsured clerics, one of whom also holds a scroll and raises a finger (perhaps to point at the man behind him). The roles of this trial scene are unclear.]
61v
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio affricano. De quo vult deo Centuriensis episcopo ...’
113r
Explicit liber secundus. Incipit liber tertius de vita et honestate clericorum
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio maguntino. Ut laici secus altare ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book III: A priest is depicted in front of an altar on which is a chalice. With both his hands he raises the Host, performing the ritual of the Eucharist. Behind him, separated by a fine ornamental tendril, is a group of lay people witnessing the celebration. One of them, who is wearing a hat and a fur-lined cape (a jurist?), kneels and joins his hands in prayer.]
166r
Explicit liber tertius. Incipit liber quartus de sponsalibus et matrimonio
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio tribunensis. De Francia quidam nobilem mulierem ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book IV: A priest is standing between a man and a woman, officiating their marriage. He holds a volume with his left hand and elevates his right hand in a blessing gesture (index and middle fingers raised). The groom holds a ring in his right hand and is about to offer it to the bride, who in turn raises her right hand to receive it (expressing her consent). Both spouses are escorted by the members of their party; in the groom's group is a man wearing a black hat and a fur-lined collar, who could perhaps be identified as a notary.]
184v
Explicit liber quartus. Incipit liber quintus de accusationibus inquisitionibus et denuntiationibus
Incipit: ‘Felix papa. Si legitimus non fuerit accusator ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book V: A pope acting as a judge is depicted seated, his right index finger raised to address the people in front of him. The group consists of three tonsured friars, two Dominicans and one Franciscan. Both the Franciscan and one of the Dominicans are holding an unravelled scroll. ]
236v
Explicit: ‘... pro spiritualibus facere quis homagium conpellatur.’
