CONTENT ANALYSIS
1 Gregorius IX papa, Decretales (sive Liber Extra)
Incipit: ‘Gregorius episcopus servus servorum dei ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating the papal bull: Pope Gregory IX is depicted seated on a throne, his feet resting on a footrest. The Pope leans towards a Dominican friar kneeling at his feet, presumably to be identified with Raymond de Peñafort, who is handing him a volume bound with a tie on the fore-edge (or perhaps it is the Pope who hands the volume to the friar). Raymond is presented to the Pope by a bishop, who leans over him and puts a hand on his shoulder. The main group is surrounded by other members of the consistory, namely bishops and friars. Behind the throne, a friar wearing a white robe is fanning the Pope with a flabellum. The scene is framed by two white drapes.]
Explicit: ‘... auctoritate sedis apostolice speciali.’
1v
Incipit liber primus. De summa trinitate et fide catholica
Incipit: ‘Innocentius III in concilio generali. Firmiter credimus ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book I: Christ is depicted enthroned with a cross nimbus, his right hand elevated in a blessing gesture (index and middle fingers raised) and his left hand holding a volume with “A” and “Ω” written on the open pages. On either side of the throne stand two male saints, each holding an unravelled scroll with biblical verses (“In principio erat verbum et verbum erat apud…” and “Audi Israel dominus deus tuus dominus unus est”). ]
119r
Incipit tertius liber. De vita et honestate clericorum
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio maguntino. Ut laici secus altare ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book III: A priest is depicted in front of an altar, raising the Host with both hands to perform the ritual of the Eucharist. On top of the altar are a chalice partially covered by a cloth and an open missal. Behind the priest is a group of clerics, some of whom are kneeling and holding golden liturgical objects (a censer and a pyx?). Behind the clerics is a group of lay people who are also witnessing the ritual, some of whom are kneeling with their hands joined in prayer.]
183r
Explicit liber quintus incipit sextus [sic]. De accusationibus et inquisitionibus et cetera
Incipit: ‘Si legitimus non fuerit accusator non fatigetur accusatus ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book V: A bishop acting as a judge is depicted enthroned, his right hand pointing (in accusation?) at another bishop and his left hand holding a book, which he presumably opens to show the exact law he is about to enforce. The bishop standing on the right addresses the judge in response by also raising his right hand, perhaps in defence. Behind him, two tonsured clerics look at each other. On the opposite side of the throne stand four elderly friars in grey robes holding some canes. The one closest to the judge leans towards the judge to address him as well. ]
232v
Explicit: ‘... facere quis homagium compellatur’
