CONTENT ANALYSIS
1 Gregorius IX papa, Decretales (sive Liber Extra)
Incipit: ‘Episcopus servus servorum dei dilectis filiis ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating the papal bull: Pope Gregory IX is depicted enthroned under a sculpted arch supported by pillars, which develops into a loggia in the background. The Pope uses both hands to grab (or perhaps to hand over) a volume, which is offered to him by a Dominican friar kneeling before him, presumably to be identified with Raymond de Peñafort. Standing behind Raymond are three more tonsured clerics.]
1v
Explicit: ‘... auctoritate sedis apostolice speciali’
Incipit liber primus de fide catholica et summa trinitate
Incipit: ‘Firmiter credimus et simpliciter confitemur ...’
[Historiated initial with a portrait of a blessing Christ.]
63r
Incipit liber secundus de iuditiis
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio affricano. De quo vult deo centuriensis episcopo ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book II: A pope acting as a judge is depicted seated on a chair with feline-like sculpted knobs, his right index finger raised to point at a bishop on the left. The gesture seems to indicate that he is pronouncing an unfavourable verdict on the bishop, who responds by raising his hand, perhaps to object to the accusation. The defendant is accompanied by two Benedictine friars, one of whom kneels and extends a hand in supplication to the pope. On the opposite side stands a bearded man wearing a cap, who should perhaps be identified with a lawyer or a jurist.]
120r
Incipit liber tertius. De vita et honestate clericorum. Rubrica
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio maguntino. Ut layci secus altare ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book III: Inside a church, a priest is depicted in front of an altar with a chalice on it. He raises the Host with both hands to perform the ritual of the Eucharist. Behind him, a kneeling acolyte is depicted in smaller proportions, holding a church candle with one hand and grasping the edge of the priest's coat with the other. In a separate area marked by the pillars and the arch of another bay is a group of kneeling lay people, one of whom joins his hands in prayer.]
178v
Incipit liber quartus. De sponsalibus et matrimonio
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio triburiensis. De Francia quidam nobilem mulierem ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book IV: A tonsured cleric is standing between a man and a woman, officiating their marriage. He grabs them both by the shoulders as the groom offers a ring to the bride, who extends her right hand to accept it. Both spouses are escorted by a member of their party, a woman for the bride and a man for the groom. The scene takes place under three arches supported by columns and pillars, above which are some small houses and a window framing a man’s head (perhaps a simplified representation of a city view).]
196r
Incipit liber quintus. Rubrica. De accusationibus et inquisitionibus et denuntiationibus. Rubrica
Incipit: ‘Felix papa. Si legittimus non fuerit accusator ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book V: A pope acting as a judge is depicted enthroned inside a golden nook, his left hand holding the edge of his cloak. He turns to the left to listen to a group of tonsured clerics, one of whom holds an unravelled scroll (presumably an indictment act). On the opposite side stands a bishop, who raises a hand to address the pope: he may be the subject of the accusation and his gesture might indicate an objection to his opponents’ claims.]
Incipit: ‘Gregorius episcopus servus servorum dei ...’
