Incipit: ‘Gregorius episcopus servus servorum dei dilectis filiis ...’
[Historiated initial with a portrait of the Pope.]
3r
De summa trinitate et fide catholica
Incipit: ‘Innocenti III in concilio generali. Firmiter credimus ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book I: Representation of the Traditio legis, i.e. the Division of Secular and Ecclesiastical Powers. Christ is depicted in the centre, enthroned, between a pope and a king/emperor. He offers a book to the pope and a sword to the king/emperor: these objects symbolise the different spheres of power (and legal action) that the two rulers hold by divine will.]
85r
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio affricano. De quo vult deo centuriensi episcopo ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book II: A pope acting as a judge is depicted seated, his left hand on a volume, a visualisation of the laws he enforces (in this case, those contained in the Liber Extra), and his right index finger raised to address the people standing in front of him. The group consists of three men and a bishop. One of the men points at the bishop, presumably in accusation, while the bishop has his back to the group as if he were walking away. The scene depicts the episode of the bishop Quodvultdeus, who, having been accused by an opponent, refused to be judged by a group of his peers.]
158r
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio maguntino. Ut layci secus altare ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book III: A priest is depicted in front of an altar with a chalice on it. He raises the Host with both hands to perform the ritual of the Eucharist. Behind him is an acolyte holding a candle stick, and further back is a group of lay people, some elegantly dressed, kneeling and joining their hands in prayer. The scene takes place in a church, as indicated by the three arches from which three lamps hang.]
231r
Incipit liber quartus de sponsalibus et matrimonis
Incipit: ‘(E)x concilio triburiense. De Francia quidam nobilem mulierem ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book IV: A priest stands between a man and a woman, officiating their marriage. He raises his right index finger as he guides the celebration of the ritual. The groom, on the left, presents the ring, while the bride, on the right, keeps her hands on her chest in a modest way (or perhaps she is refusing to consent to the marriage?). Both the bride and the groom are escorted by their parties. The members of the parties and the priest are depicted in larger proportions than the spouses, perhaps to indicate their young age.]
256r
Incipit liber quintus de accusationibus inquisitionibus et denuntiationibus
Incipit: ‘Felix papa. Si legittimus non fuerit accusator ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book V: A pope acting as a judge is depicted enthroned. His left hand is raised to address the people in front of him, or, more likely, to receive something. Before him stand two people, one of whom is a tonsured cleric holding a scroll which is being handed to the judge. The scroll reads: “Iste noster po(s)sid(e)re(m) symoniac(us) et do(man)da? (...) ecce”. With his free hand, the cleric points to a bishop standing behind him: given the content of the scroll, it seems like he is accusing him of simony. The bishop, who is accompanied by another tonsured cleric, raises his right index finger to deny the accusation.]
