1r[Index Decretalium.]
2v[Bulla "Rex pacificus".]
Incipit: ‘Episcopus servus servorum dei dilectis filiis ...’
Explicit: ‘... auctoritate sedis apostolice spetiali’
3rIncipit liber primus de summa trinitate et fide catholica
Incipit: ‘Innocentius tertius in concilio generali. Firmiter credimus et simpliciter confitemur ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book I: The Trinity is represented by the image of the Throne of Grace, i.e. God the Father seated on a throne, spreading his arms and holding a crucifix on which hangs the body of Christ. The dove of the Holy Ghost is suspended between the two. ]
70rExplicit liber primus. Incipit secundus de iudiciis
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio affricano. De quo vult deo centuriensi episcopo ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book II: A pope acting as a judge is depicted enthroned, his right hand raised to address the people in front of him and his left hand holding a book, which he presumably opens to show the exact law he is about to enforce. Before him is a group consisting of lay people, a bishop and a tonsured cleric. The latter is holding an unfolded scroll, which is extended towards the judge. A scroll is also held by a man dressed in red (perhaps a jurist), who points at the bishop with his other hand. The bishop, in turn, raises his hand to indicate the tonsured cleric. A possible interpretation is that the man in red is handing the judge an indictment act (the libellus, whose delivery marks the beginning of the court case) to accuse the bishop, who is represented by the cleric, who is also handing the judge a document.]
127rExplicit liber secundus. Incipit liber tertius de vita et honestate clericorum. Rubrica. Incipit sap(iente?)s
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio maguntino. Ut laici secus altare ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book III: A priest is depicted standing in front of an altar with a chalice on it. He blesses the chalice by raising his index and middle fingers, as he prepares to celebrate the Eucharist. Behind him are an acolyte and three lay people; the acolyte puts a hand on one of the laics’ shoulder and pushes them away from the sacred space, as they are not allowed to witness the ritual. ]
187vExplicit liber tertius. Incipit liber quartus. De sponsalibus et matrimonio
Incipit: ‘(E)x concilio triburiense. De Francia quidam nobilem mulierem ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book IV: A priest is standing between a man and a woman, officiating their marriage. He holds them by their right wrists, preparing to join their hands to make their union official (dextrarum iunctio). The bride, wearing a sheer veil, raises her free hand to express her consent to the marriage. Both spouses are escorted by their parties, consisting of two men for the groom and a woman for the bride. The two men hold a hand on their chest, and the woman places hand on the bride’s shoulder to encourage her. ]
207v-208rExplicit liber quartus. Incipit liber quintus. De accusationibus, inquisitionibus et denuntiationibus
208rIncipit: ‘Felix papa. Si legitimus non fuerit accusator ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book V: A pope acting as a judge is depicted enthroned, his right hand pointing to a scroll which he holds with his left hand. The scroll reads: “Tu me(n)tiris non”, and the opposite edge is held by a Benedictine friar, who points at himself with his other hand. In front of the judge stand another Benedictine and an abbot holding a crozier: the first points to the abbot in accusation, who in turn raises a hand to object. The writing on the scroll could be the judge’s verdict: since the friar is holding the other end of the scroll, one must assume that the sentence is addressed to him, he therefore believes the friars and their claim against the abbot.]
264vExplicit: ‘... pro spiritualibus facere quis homagium compellatur. Explicit liber quintus. Libro finito referamus gratiam Christo amen. Benedictus Deus in donis suis et sanctus in omnibus operibus suis qui est benedictus in sancta sanctorum amen. Qui scripsit et qui legit hunc librum anime eorum portetur in paradisum. Amen.’
