1vDe summa trinitate et fide chatholica
[Bulla "Rex pacificus".]
Incipit: ‘Gregorius episcopus servus servorum dei ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating the papal bull: Pope Gregory IX is depicted seated on a throne, his right hand raised to address the group of people before him and his left hand grasping an open volume offered to him (or perhaps it is the Pope handing it over) by a Dominican friar, presumably to be identified with Raymond de Peñafort. Along with Raymond are other tonsured clerics, one of whom kneels to kiss the Pope's foot, and a bishop, who raises his right hand showing his palm and touches the open volume with his left hand. The threefold touching of the open volume is intended to signify the legitimation of the Liber Extra by both the authority of the Pope and the ecclesiastical community, and to convey the idea that the text is the reference collection of the law of the Church. The scene takes place under an architectural structure with a blue drape at the top.]
Explicit: ‘... facere absque auctoritate sedis apostolice speciali’
2rIncipit: ‘Firmiter credimus et simpliciter confitemur ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book I: Christ is depicted enthroned, with two groups of people on either side. He places his hands on the foreheads of the two men leading the groups, who slightly bow before him. The one on the left, who is wearing a red cloak, is perhaps a jurist; the one on the right is a tonsured cleric. The image could represent the divine delegation of the exercise and teaching of the law, assigned by Christ to the clergy and representatives of the university. The architectural background from which the figures emerge could be a further reference to the secular world in which the men act, as opposed to the abstract golden background against which the figure of Christ is represented.]
74rExplicit liber primus incipit liber secundus rubrica de iudiciis
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio affricano. De quo vult deo centurionensi episcopo ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book II: A pope acting as a judge is depicted enthroned, his right hand raised to indicate a group of people on the right and his left hand holding a book, which he presumably opens to show the exact law he is about to enforce. The judge is surrounded by a group of people, among whom are two bishops and some tonsured clerics. The bishop on the left turns his back to the judge, raising both hands. The scene depicts the episode of the bishop Quodvultdeus, who, having been accused by an opponent, refused to be judged by a group of his peers.]
139rExplicit liber secundus incipit liber tertius. De vita et honestate clericorum rubrica
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio maguntino. Ut layci secus altare ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book III: The scene takes place in a church, the interior of which is divided into two areas by a column. On the right side, in the presbytery, is an altar with a chalice on top of it. A priest is standing in front of it, raising the Host with both hands to perform the ritual of the Eucharist. Behind him, an acolyte is kneeling, holding a candle stick with one hand and grasping the edge of the priest's coat with the other. Further back, in the aisle, is a group of kneeling lay people, some joining their hands in prayer, as well as a tonsured cleric standing before a lectern with an open missal on it.]
202vIncipit liber quartus. Rubrica.
Incipit: ‘Explicit liber tertius deo gratias. De Francia quidam nobilem mulierem ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book IV: A priest is standing between a man and a woman, officiating their marriage. His right hand is elevated in a blessing gesture (index and middle fingers raised) and his left hand holds a volume. The groom, on the left, has both hands in his sleeves; he is escorted by the members of his party, namely two men, the elder of whom (his father?) is pointing to him with his hand and presenting him to the bystanders. The bride, on the right, has her arms crossed over her chest; she is escorted by two women, both holding the edge of their coats.]
224vDe accusationibus inquisitionibus et denuntiationibus
Incipit: ‘Felix papa. Si legittimus fuerit accusator ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book V: A pope acting as a judge is depicted enthroned and surrounded by a group of people. With both hands, he holds an open volume with the help of a tonsured cleric who raises his hand in an argumentative manner. The pope’s gaze is fixed on a bishop on the right, who raises his hand in response. The scene could represent the cleric’s accusation against the bishop, supported by the principle expressed in the open book, held by the judge as the source on which his decision should be based. The judge interrogates the defendant by looking at him, and he raises his hand to deny the claim. ]
