1v[Papal bull "Rex pacificus".]
Incipit: ‘Gregorius episcopus servus servorum dei ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating the papal bull: Pope Gregory IX is depicted seated, his right index finger raised to address the people in front of him and his left hand holding a volume bound with two ties on the fore-edge (presumably, the Liber Extra). The Pope is surrounded by tonsured clerics; two of them are kneeling in front of him and one is reaching to grab his cloak to honour him. The scene takes place in front of an aedicula.]
Explicit: ‘... absque auctoritate sedis apelatione spetiali.’
2rDe summa trinitate et fede catholica
Incipit: ‘Innocentius tertius in concilio generali. Firmiter credimus et simpliciter confitemur ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book I: Christ is depicted with a cross halo, his right hand elevated in a blessing gesture (index and middle fingers raised) and his left hand holding a volume. He stands between Saint Paul and Saint Peter, who are recognisable by their attributes (a sword and a key respectively). Behind them are four other figures with halos, two of which are angels.]
66rExplicit liber primus incipit liber secundus. Rubrica. De iuditiis. Rubrica
Incipit: ‘De quo vult deo centuriensi episcopo ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book II: A pope acting as a judge is depicted enthroned, his right hand raised to address the people in front of him and his left hand holding up an open book, presumably to show the exact law he is about to enforce. Before him, among a group of tonsured clerics, is a man holding a written scroll with one hand and pointing backwards with the other. He is indicating a bishop behind him, who turns his back to the group and walks out of the room with both hands raised. The man is presumably handing the judge an indictment act (the libellus, whose delivery marks the beginning of the court case) and his gesture suggests that he is accusing the bishop. The scene depicts the episode of the bishop Quodvultdeus, who, having been accused by an opponent, refused to be judged by a group of his peers.]
124rIncipit liber tertius. De vita et honestate clericorum
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio maguntino. Ut laici secus altare ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book III: Inside a church, a priest is depicted in front of an altar with an open missal and an altar lamp on top. He raises the Host with both hands to perform the ritual of the Eucharist. In front of the priest, on the opposite side of the altar, is a tonsured cleric with his hands joined in prayer; behind the priest is a kneeling acolyte holding a candlestick with one hand and the priest’s vestments with the other. Behind the acolyte, in an area of the church separated by the architectural structure, a group of kneeling lay people is witnessing the ritual and praying.]
172rIncipit liber quartus. De sponsalibus et matrimonio. Rubrica
Incipit: ‘De Francia quidam nobilem mulierem ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book IV: A bishop is standing between a man and a woman, officiating their marriage. He places both his hands on the heads of the spouses. The groom, on the left, has both hands in his sleeves; he is escorted by the members of his party, namely three men, one of whom is wearing a hat (perhaps he is a notary?). The bride, on the right, has her arms crossed over her chest; she is escorted by three women. The position of the spouses’ hands might indicate that they do not consent to the marriage. The members of the parties and the priest are depicted in larger proportions than the spouses, perhaps to indicate their young age. ]
188rIncipit liber quintus. De accusationibus inquisitionibus et denuntiationibus
Incipit: ‘Si legitimus non fuerit accusator non fatigetur ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book V: A pope acting as a judge is depicted enthroned, his left hand pulling up his cloak and his right index finger raised to address the people before him. The group consists of an elderly man, in the centre, and two pairs of men, presumably the two opposing parties and their legal representatives. The man closest to the judge addresses him with the movement of his hands, while his lawyer encourages him by placing a hand on his back. Behind them, the opponent, who is a tonsured cleric, clutches his cloak (the nervous gesture could suggest that he is the defendant) while his lawyer whispers to him what he should say. ]
