Content Analysis:
1r[Papal bull "Rex pacificus"]
Incipit: ‘Gregorius episcopus servus servorum dei dilectis ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating the papal bull: Pope Gregory IX is depicted seated, his left hand raised to address the people in front of him and his right hand grasping (or perhaps handing over) a volume. The volume is offered to him by a kneeling tonsured cleric, who is also addressing the pope through a raised hand. Behind him stand a cardinal, a bishop and a Benedictine friar, representing the consistory and the ecclesiastical community receiving the new collection of laws.]
1vExplicit: ‘... auctoritate sedis apostolice speciali’
De summa trinitate et fide catholica. Rubrica
Incipit: ‘Innocencius tercius in concilio generali. Firmiter credimus ...’
199rIncipit liber secundus de iudiciis. Rubrica
Incipit: ‘In concilio africano. De quo vul(t) deo ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book II: The image depicts two phases of the judicial proceeding. On the right side, a secular judge is seated in a central position, visually suggesting his impartiality in the administration of justice. His right index finger and his left hand are raised to guide the debate between the defendant and the plaintiff (recognisable by the fact that he points to his opponent in accusation). The left side represents the execution of the sentence: a guard is represented with a key in his hand as he pushes the condemned man into the tower where he will be imprisoned.]
376rExplicit liber secundus. Incipit liber tercius. De vita et honestate clericorum. Rubrica
Incipit: ‘Ut layci secus altare quando sacra ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book III: A priest is depicted approaching an altar with an open missal, a chalice and a crucifix on top. He is preparing to celebrate the ritual of the Eucharist. Behind him, an acolyte puts his hand on the arm of a layman and pushes him away from the altar, as he is not allowed to witness the ritual. The layman turns back to look at the acolyte and proceeds to walk into a tower that represents the threshold of the sacred space.]
513rIncipit liber quartus. De sponsalibus et matrimoniis. Rubrica
Incipit: ‘De Francia quidam nobilem mulierem de Saxonia ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book IV: A priest is standing between a man and a woman, officiating their marriage. He holds them by their right wrists, preparing to join their hands to make their union official (dextrarum iunctio). Both spouses raise their free hand to express their consent to the marriage.]
561rDe accusacionibus inquisicionibus et denunciacionibus. Liber quintus
Incipit: ‘Si legitimus non fuerit accusator non fatigetur ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book V: A pope acting as a judge is depicted enthroned in a central position, visually suggesting his impartiality in the administration of justice. He raises his right index finger and his left hand to address the Benedictine friar on the right. The friar responds by also raising his left hand and handing the judge a piece of written paper or parchment: this may represent the delivery of the libellus (the indictment act), which marks the beginning of the judicial process. On the left side is another Benedictine, presumably the subject of the accusation. His raised hands suggest that he is denying the claim.]

BIBLIOGRAPHICAL ANALYSIS
Unitary manuscript
Binding: rebound
Layout: 2 columns; Textus inclusus (Glossa)
Illustrations: Illuminated frontispieces on ff. 1r (illustration of the papal bull: Pope Gregory IX receives the book of the Decretales), 199r (illustration of book II, "De iudiciis": Judgement and imprisonment of the defendant), 376r (illustration of book III, "De vita et honestate clericorum": Expulsion of lay people from the celebration of the Eucharist), 513r (illustration of book IV, "De sponsalibus": Wedding ceremony) and 561r (illustration of book V, "De accusationibus, inquisitionibus et denunciationibus": Judgement scene with pope). Illuminated ornamental initials at the beginning of each titulus, both in the main text and in the gloss. Initials and paragraph signs alternatively in red and blue throughout the volume. Rubrics and running titles in red and blue. Maria Alessandra Bilotta attributed the illuminated decoration to a single artist, observing that they exhibit a strong Parisian influence and that their activity was probably contemporary to the beginning of Jean Pucelle's (1315-1320). Bilotta also notes that the ornamental initials with painted leaves are stylistically close to Toulouse. She hypothesises that either the artist worked in Paris and adapted his style to the Toulousan taste of the patron, or that they moved from Paris to Toulouse (less probable).
