Incipit prohemius
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating the papal bull: Pope Gregory IX is depicted seated on a throne with drapery. With his right hand he grasps (or perhaps hands over) a scroll offered to him by a kneeling tonsured friar, with his left hand, he grasps (or, again, perhaps hands over) a volume bound with a tie on the fore-edge offered to him by a kneeling man in secular clothes (a lawyer/jurist?). The two kneeling men may represent the groups of people to whom the compilation of Canon Law is addressed, namely the clergy and the university community.]

The latter turns his back and looks back at the judge raising his hand, perhaps in defence. Between them is also a tonsured cleric. ]
