Content Analysis:
1rIncipit: ‘Venerabilibus et disc(ernent)is viris doctoribus ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece divided into four scenes. At the upper left, Pope Gregory IX is depicted enthroned, his hands raised to address the people around him. Some cardinals are handing the volume containing his collection of laws to a group of kneeling jurists; on the opposite side are two kneeling laymen and a group of tonsured clerics, all holding a written leaflet. At the upper right, a group of cardinals is handing sealed documents with seals to a group of kneeling men; behind them, a man looks over his shoulder as he handles a cauldron. At lower left is the consecration of a bishop, and at lower right the consecration of an abbot.]
121rIncipit: ‘De quovultdeo super glossa sed non ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece: A secular judge is depicted enthroned, his left hand holding a scroll and his right index finger pointing to it. Above him is a painted panel depicting the Crucifixion, which serves to visualise the divine delegation received by the judge in administering justice. On either side are some men wearing hats and cloaks, presumably to be identified as jurists, all raising their index fingers and hands to indicate their participation in the legal discussion. In front of the judge’s throne is a chair on which a scribe is writing in a volume. Before him is a desk with an open volume on it and a board with a written leaf on it. At the sides of the desk are two groups of kneeling people, perhaps the two opposing parties and their legal representatives. The man and the woman on the right raise their index fingers (in accusation?), while the two men and the woman on the right gesticulate and produce some written leaflets.]
