Incipit: ‘Gregorius episcopus servus servorum dei ...’
[Historiated initial illustrating the papal bull: Pope Gregory IX is depicted seated, his right hand elevated in a blessing gesture (index and middle fingers raised) and his left hand grasping (or perhaps handing over) a volume bound with a tie on the fore-edge. The volume is offered to him by a kneeling man, who is accompanied by another man, who raises his right arm to address the Pope. ]

Explicit liber primus. Incipit secundus. Rubrica. De iudiciis
Incipit: ‘De quo vult deo centuriensi episcopo ...’
[Historiated initial illustrating book II: An ecclesiastical judge is depicted seated, his right index raised to address the tonsured cleric on the left. The latter raises his right index finger (in accusation?) and points at the man wearing a cap and a red robe on the opposite side. The man, who is perhaps a lawyer, holds up his right hand to object and hands a leaflet to the judge. The document could be an indictment act (the libellus, whose delivery marks the beginning of the court case).]

Incipit: ‘Ut laici secus altare quando ...’
[Historiated initial illustrating book III: A priest is standing in front of an altar covered by a white cloth, on top of which is a chalice. He raises both hands towards the chalice, as he prepares to celebrate the Eucharist. Behind him, an acolyte grabs the arm of a layman and pushes him away from the sacred space, as he is not allowed to witness the ritual.]

[Historiated initial illustrating book IV: A priest is standing between a man and a woman, officiating their marriage. His right hand is elevated in a blessing gesture (index and middle fingers raised) and his left hand is placed on the bride’s wrist preparing to join it to the groom’s to make their union official (dextrarum iunctio).]
225v
De accusacionibus inquisicionibus et denuntiacionibus
Incipit: ‘Felix papa. (S)i legitimus non fuerit accusator ...’
[Historiated initial illustrating book V: A pope acting as a judge is depicted seated, his right index finger raised to address the people before him. These are two Benedictine friars, one of whom is kneeling in front of the pope, and an abbot, recognisable by his crozier. The scene probably depicts the accusation of the abbot presented by two friars of his community and the delivery of the verdict by the judge.]
