CONTENT ANALYSIS
1 Gregorius IX papa, Decretales (sive Liber Extra)
Incipit prohemium domini Gregorii pape noni super decretales
[Bulla "Rex pacificus".]
Incipit: ‘Gregorius episcopus servus servorum dei ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating the papal bull: Pope Gregory IX is depicted seated, holding a volume bound with a tie on the fore-edge with both hands. The volume is offered to him (or perhaps he is offering it) by a Dominican friar kneeling before him and joining his hands in prayer, presumably to be identified with Raymond de Peñafort. Beside Raymond is another kneeling Dominican friar.]
63r
Incipit liber secundus de iudiciis
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio affricano. De quo vult deo ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book II: A pope acting as a judge is depicted seated, his right index finger raised to address the people in front of him. These are two men, one of whom bares his right hand (he is holding a glove in his left hand) and raises it, perhaps swearing to be truthful. The man could represent a witness who takes an oath before making his statement (the procedure is treated in titulus XX, De testibus et attestationibus).]
112v
Explicit liber secundus incipit liber tertius de vita et honestate clericorum
Incipit: ‘[E]x concilio maguntino. Ut laici secus altare ...’
[Historiated initial illustrating book III: A priest is standing in front of an altar covered by a cloth, on top of which is a chalice. He holds the Host with his left hand and raises his right hand to bless it, as he prepares to celebrate the Eucharist. Behind him, an acolyte grabs the arm of a layman and pushes him away from the sacred space, as he is not allowed to witness the ritual.]
164v
De sponsalibus et matrimoniis
Incipit: ‘Ex concilio triburiensis. De Francia quidam ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book IV: A priest is standing between a man and a woman, officiating their marriage. His right hand is elevated in a blessing gesture (index and middle fingers raised) and his left hand is placed on top of the spouses’ joint hands, making their union official (dextrarum iunctio). The groom holds the glove he has removed with his free hand (to be official, the oath must be taken with bare hands). Both spouses are escorted by their parties, consisting of a man for the groom and a woman for the bride. Both place a hand on their chest, perhaps to swear as witnesses. ]
182v
Incipit liber quintus de accusationibus et inquisitionibus et denunciationibus
Incipit: ‘Si legitimus non fuerit accusator ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book V: A pope acting as a judge is depicted seated in a frontal position, visually suggesting his impartiality in the administration of justice, his right hand elevated in a blessing gesture (index and middle fingers raised). On either side of him is a pair of Benedictine friars, one of whom is kneeling with his hands joined in prayer.]
234v
Explicit: ‘... facere homagium compellatur. Explicit liber quintus’
