3r[Bulla "Rex pacificus".]
Incipit: ‘Gregorius episcopus servus servorum ...’
Incipit primus liber. De summa trinitate et fide catholica. Rubrica
3v[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating the papal bull: Pope Gregory IX is depicted seated, his left hand grasping (or perhaps handing over) a volume and his right hand raised to bless it. The volume is offered to him by a kneeling elderly Franciscan friar, who is accompanied by a bishop and two tonsured clerics. On the left side stand two more clerics and two cardinals talking to each other. Both of them point in the direction of the Pope. The bystanders in the presentation scene represent the consistory and the ecclesiastical community receiving the new collection of laws. The scene takes place in an architectural structure with pointed arches and columns dividing the different groups of people.]
Incipit: ‘Firmiter credimus et simpliciter confitemur ...’
67rIncipit liber secundus de iudiciis rubrica
Incipit: ‘De quovultdeo centuriensi episcopo ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book II: A pope acting as a judge is depicted seated, his right index finger and his left hand raised to address the people on the right. Among these it is possible to recognise two bishops and a tonsured cleric. One of the bishops is holding a volume and pointing to it, while the other addresses the pope with his hand gestures. On the opposite side is a group of lay people discussing among each other, presumably jurists. The scene takes place in an architectural structure with pointed arches and columns dividing the different groups of people.]
123rIncipit: ‘Ut laici secus altare quando ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book III: The scene takes place in a church, the interior of which is divided into three arches by two columns. A priest is depicted in front of an altar with a chalice on it. He raises the Host with both hands to perform the ritual of the Eucharist. Behind him is a group of tonsured clerics, one of whom kneels and joins his hands in prayer. Further back is a group of laymen, one of whom also kneels and brings one hand to his head. Each group is divided by a column, to emphasize that they must witness the ritual separately.]
180rIncipit: ‘De Francia quidam nobilem mulierem ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book IV: A priest is standing between a man and a woman, officiating their marriage. He raises both hands to invite the spouses to proceed with the offer of the ring. On the left, the groom holds the ring in his right hand; on the right, the bride extends her right hand to receive it, encouraged by a woman beside her who guides her arm. Both spouses are escorted by their respective parties. ]
198vIncipit: ‘Si legitimus non fuerit accusator ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book V: A pope acting as a judge is depicted seated, his right index finger raised to address the people on the right. Among the group is a tonsured cleric and a lawyer holding a scroll: the document reads “deno(n)tio”, thus it can be identified as an indictment act. On the opposite side is another group of people, with two tonsured clerics in the foreground pointing to the prosecution with their hands.]
