1r[Bulla "Rex pacificus".]
Incipit: ‘Gregorius episcopus servus servorum dei ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating the papal bull: Pope Gregory IX is depicted seated, his right hand raised to address the people in front of him. Before the Pope is a kneeling cleric offering him a volume. Behind him is a group of clerics and a man wearing a hat and a red robe, presumably a jurist. The scene takes place in an architectural structure with two pointed arches and a central column.]
64rIncipit liber secundus de iudiciis
Incipit: ‘De chovultheo centuriensi episcopo ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book II: A judge is depicted seated in a frontal position, visually suggesting his impartiality in the administration of justice. His left hand is holding a volume, a visualisation of the laws he enforces (in this case, those contained in the Liber Extra), and his right index finger is pointing to the right. Here, a man is standing before the judge, addressing him by pointing upwards his right index finger, and his lawyer is behind him, suggesting to him what to say. The judge’s gaze is fixed on the opposite side, where another lawyer and a woman are represented. The lawyer is addressing the judge by raising his right index finger and his left hand on behalf of the woman. She stands behind him, holding a document from which a seal hangs. The scene depicts a wife delivering an accusation to her husband, perhaps in reference to titulus VI, chapter I. This illustrates the case of a judge initially refusing the libellus (indictment act) delivered by a woman accusing her husband of adultery, since the husband’s lawyer kept delaying the trial. Eventually, however, the judge accepted her testimony, since he was tired of postponing. ]
121v[Added illumination of Virgin with Child and St. Agnes, painted by an English artist (14th century).]
122rIncipit liber tercius de vita et honestate clericorum. Rubrica
Incipit: ‘Ut laici secus altare quando ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book III: The scene takes place in a church, the interior of which is divided into two arches by a column. On the right side, in the presbytery, a priest is depicted standing in front of an altar with a chalice and an open missal on it. He raises both his hands as he prepares to celebrate the ritual of the Eucharist. Behind him, in the aisle, are two acolytes, one observing the ritual and holding a volume, the other other, with his back to the altar, forcibly expelling a layman from the sacred space because he is not allowed to witness the ritual. The acolyte grabs the man’s arm with his left hand and raises his right hand in a threatening manner. The layman proceeds to walk away, turning his head to look at the acolyte and raising his hand as a sign of acquiescence.]
173vIncipit: ‘De Francia quidam nobilem mulierem ...’
173r[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book IV: A bishop is standing between a man and a woman, officiating their marriage. He holds them by their wrists (the right for the groom, the left for the bride), preparing to join their hands to make their union official (dextrarum iunctio). Both spouses raise their free hands to express their consent. The couple is escorted by their witnesses, namely a man for the groom and a woman for the bride. They engage in the ceremony with their hand gestures, the man raising both hands and the woman holding her hand on her heart.]
191rIncipit liber quintus de accusationibus et inquisitionibus et denunciationibus
Incipit: ‘Si leggittimus non fuerit accusator ...’
[Illuminated frontispiece illustrating book V: A pope acting as a judge is depicted seated, his right hand holding a volume, a representation of the law he is enforcing (in this case, the Liber Extra), his left index finger raised to address the people in front of him. These are a group of Benedictine friars, one of whom is kneeling before the pope with his hands joined in prayer, and two of whom are also holding volumes.]
